Any suggestions for good day-hiking trails near Ocoee, TN area?

Posted By: genglish  //  Category: Hiking

Also where would be a good place to camp for several
days where I would be close to the hiking opportunities
you mention? Thanks.

The visitor center near the olympic white water rafting course has MANY MANY trails of all levels in the area. There are signs marking the trails and providing distances. And if the dam is opened and the river "turned on" you can go rafting!

Where, on line, can I buy an easy to understand, fishing knot tying book?

Posted By: genglish  //  Category: Fishing

I need some insrucktions, on how to tie a line to line blood knot!

I’m sure there are any number of knot-tying books, but knots are notoriously difficult to illustrate on the page. Unless you have a chance to look at the book to find out if you can easily understand the illustrations, buying a knot book is gonna be a crapshoot.

I would go to your local fly shop (if you’ve got one) and ask one of the people there to demonstrate a blood knot for you. I don’t mean go to the Wal*Mart fishing aisle, I mean go to a fly fishing shop or a tackle shop where the workers are anglers and are eager to help even if they don’t sell you something. Watch someone tie the knot and and then try it yourself. Practice a few times there in the store. Look around the store and see if they have a little knot booklet — I found some little plastic cards that I keep in my vest that have been helpful over the years, though lately I carry it around in order to let others borrow it rather than my own reference:

http://www.knotcards.com/html/fishing_knot_cards.html

The second part to this answer is that there is a vast amount of online resources to help you learn to tie fishing knots. As long as you’re online looking for knot books, just bring your line to the computer and take a look:

http://www.animatedknots.com/indexfishing.php

http://www.troutlet.com/Fishing-Knots-W21.aspx

http://www.orvis.com/orvis_assets/files/index.html

There are others, too, and each one will show you the knot in a slightly different way. Once you tie a blood knot maybe five or six times, you’ll have it down. After that, you just get better and faster at tying it.

Does anyone know of any decent hiking trails on Long Island?

Posted By: genglish  //  Category: Hiking

I just finished spending a weekend up in Lake George, and went on a really nice hiking expedition. I’m home now, and I have a nice hiking stick which I’d really like to put to use. I’m aware of some less vigorous trails–just a dirt road in a circle. But does anyone know of anything with maybe some hills, or actual hiking involved?

What are some good books to buy for my 28-year-old boyfriend?

Posted By: genglish  //  Category: Fishing

He says he’s never read a book cover to cover because he’s never found a book that would hold his interest. He’s a guys guy – into dirtbiking, fishing and surfing. He owns his own construction company and is extremely intelligent. I want to get him to love reading as much as I do but I need suggestions on good books.

If he likes action movies like the Bourne or James Bond style of movies, then he might like the books of Matthew Reilly. These are jam packed with action, almost from the very first page and will keep just about anyone turning pages. Start with Ice Station or Seven Deadly Wonders, which are the first books in their respective series. The situations the heroes get into and how they get out of them will keep him reading and coming back for more.

Good books on bow hunting / construction?

Posted By: genglish  //  Category: Hunting

Hey guys,

Looking to get a bit more into the natural side of things, so I was wondering if you had any good suggestions for books to brush up on sneaking up and tracking different types of prey with a bow- big game, small game, any area. Also, any suggestions on books that detail bow construction?

Wouldn’t mind reading up on how the Native American tribes (or any other tribes) went about tracking and constructing bows. Thanks!

Library/Amazon……look up hunting, tracking, stalking big game ans small game. Then look up Indian hunting, tracking …etc…z
