Hiking
I’m flying into PDX and am trying to find the best hiking trail w/ waterfalls and all that good stuff.
Waterfalls by bus? Not really. Rent an auto at the airport, take I-205 south about 3 miles, then east on I-84 to exit 28 Bridal Veil (about 20 miles/18 minutes). Follow the road about 1/3 mile up to the Historic Columbia River Highway. The parking lot to the right is the trailhead for Angel’s Rest and Devil’s Rest. This is a moderately strenuous 2–3 hour hike to spectacular views up and down the Columbia Gorge.
Turn right (west), and go less than two miles to Latourell Falls http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latourell_Falls which can be hiked to near the bottom, and over the top in about an hour.
Turn around and go east. Every time you see a parking lot adjacent to the road, stop and park. There are six more major water falls along here. Wahkeenah and Multnomah have extensive hiking trails up along their course. There is about a 1500 foot vertical climb (over several miles) to the sources. The forest is gorgeous all along here. The trail from Angel’s Rest connects to the top of Wahkeenah and Multnomah Falls. In between is some lightly used trail were you might not see anyone else, even on a summer weekend. From the Bridal Veil parking lot to Multnomah Falls is 3.3 miles on the historic highway, or about 7 miles along the upper trail. It is a great loop for thorough immersion in nature. Allow 3–4 hours. You can get food and drink at Multnomah Falls Lodge. Naturally you can drink the water directly from any of the falls and creeks (without treatment).
If you absolutely have to use mass transportation, take Max (red line) from the airport to downtown. Here, I mapped it https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=pdx+airport&daddr=Wildwood+Trail&hl=en&sll=45.519278,-122.698059&sspn=0.034339,0.077162&geocode=FSqftwIdolux-CE9XA44k3baWynRINx0qqCVVDE9XA44k3baWw%3BFfaltgIdKICv-A&dirflg=r&ttype=now&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=def&mra=ls&t=m&z=12&start=0 Light rail to the edge of downtown, then up the stairs and transfer to a westbound bus. On bus 20, advise the driver you want Wildwood Trail. He or she will know where it is, but it is not common for people to ride the bus to it. Don’t cross the road (Burnside Street) and follow the trail first to Pittock Mansion, have a look around: it’s a city park. Then walk to the top right corner of the parking lot and follow Wildwood Trail. It runs almost 40 miles in total, about 33 miles continue from here. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forest_Park_%28Portland,_Oregon%29 There are no dramatic waterfalls here, but plenty of forest, hills, and the occasional creek.
If you go the other way and cross Burnside, you enter Washington Park’s Hoyt Arboretum. Continue to follow the trail and visit the Vietnam Memorial, World Forestry Center, and Oregon Zoo. In the parking lot are elevators to Max for a return trip to wherever.

Hiking
I just moved to Miami Florida and I love nature and want to know is there any swimming holes that not a lot of people know about that you would need to hike to? Or any hiking trails? I love going hiking to places where There is not a lot of people and any other places that not a lot of people know about. It might make no sense but someone please help me!(: thank you so much.
I know of no swimming holes. Even if I did, I would never use them because of large carnivorous reptiles that may be lurking.
Hiking is a different story. Taking into consideration that we’re in a very urban area in Miami-Dade and Broward, there are several city and county parks that have hiking trails, each with an abundance of local flora and fauna. Getting further away from the urban area, Jonathan Dickinson Park near Jupiter is wide open for hiking. West of Miami is Shark Valley, which has a great walking/biking trail, but I would do it only in late winter/very early spring. I know that the levees that run along the western canals are good spots for hiking.
No doubt you’ll get better advice if you hook up with one of the local hiking clubs in the area…

I was in China for one month and usually their hiking trails up mountains are made of concrete, but in Canada and US they just clear a trail for you. Why are we so cheap?
It is not about being cheap and it depends on the situation, the main thing is what defines wilderness. In the USA it means 100% natural with little to no human impact. In some cases cement is used to make trail safety issues secure, as in bridges or stairs but whenever the natural is good enough they leave it as it is.
