Last weekend my son and I went on a day hiking trip. Before we left the truck I got out the Garmin GPS and the topo maps and saved the truck as a waypoint.
We then hiked to a local creek and had lunch with eversafe meals – which are kinda like MREs.

Excellent point on the battery issue. I try for all AA. And why not an extra set of batteries?
Also, A few cans of Campbells Soup maybe some Saltines and a few PopTarts, nuts, even a bag of bread rolls are good and cheap to carry along.

The world needs …
The world needs more fathers like you. My dad always took me on trips. Salmon fishing in Alaska, on many cross country trips of the country, and even just little things like taking us down to the small lake we lived by and went fishing for little perch. Times I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.

if you dont know …
if you dont know the area its nice to have a map of the area if you cant just go find one.. me I just use a compas I just need to know the direction because im in vallys and mountians hard to get lose you just pick a river and follow it get lost hike down to it and follow it to the road ect.. and in a vally hard to get lost..

i had some of those …
i had some of those food packs once,when i was in a pretty bad hurricane,the national rescue people(i forget what they’re called,but they give out food n stuff after bad storms,usually hurricanes)they handed out a bunch of those kinds of heat up deals,they were some sort of pasta or something though,and there wasnt any dessert.
