I would like to know of some good books for a sophomore in high school. He is into hunting and loves the book Old Yeller. The book needs to be over 180 pages long. I checked out guysread.com, or something like that, but I would like to know of more suggestions. I will chose the best answer with the book he likes most!
I forgot….. it needs to be fiction!
I teach that age range and you might want to let him check out a summary online of The Pearl by Steinbeck. It’s usually LOVED by the males in my class. It’s the story of a very poor Mexican family who have a son who is stung by a scorpion. They go pearl diving to find payment for a doctor and find a huge pearl. It changes their world as it brings greed and evil into it.
I also introduce my students to A Separate Peace by John Knowles. It is a little longer book, but it is SO good. It’s about a boarding school for males right before the world war. The boys become so involved in the war that it affects their lives and changes who they are. It would have some relevance to our world today for him as well.
