My small collection of hatchets. My daughter inspired me to do this video, as she was reading “Hatchet” by Gary Paulson. It is an excellent children’s story on survival, from the Scholastic Book Club.

Narrated hike to Grinnell Glacier in Glacier National Park Montana. It’s highly produced and looks like something you’d see on the Travel Channel or National Geographic. Includes interviews with a ranger and hikers.

This hike is not for anyone with a fear of heights. The clincher for most hikers is the last half-mile to the top that I show on the video, where you must climb along a narrow ridge that has dizzing drop-offs on both sides of about 1500 feet. Six people have fallen to their deaths in the past several years but my guess is your greater risk was the drive to the Zion National Park so be safe and I hope you enjoy the video. Have a great day! A strenuous trail for experienced Grand Canyon hikers, I hiked the Hermit Trail from Hermit’s Rest to Granite Rapids and back.
*There’s another part to my story, someone who was in the background, but the reason behind my successful solo hike.
Eric Stanley, a supervisor at the Grand Canyon General Store and top-notch in wilderness and adventure sports, advised me — especially on how much water was needed for a trail like this. He loaned me some of his gear, saving me on costly rentals. He believed in me.
Sadly, he died while hiking late night in the Canyon, eight months after I hiked Hermit’s Trail.
Stanley is one of the biggest influences in my life. I use the knowledge that he gave me in so many aspects of my life.
He is missed….
